Media Advisory: Award Ceremony of the 30th North-South Prize of the Council of Europe honours champions of global cooperation and solidarity
Strasbourg/Lisbon/New York, 23 October – The award ceremony of the 30th North-South Prize of the Council of Europe will take place in the Senate room of the Portuguese Parliament in Lisbon on 29 October.
The Prize will be awarded to Miguel Ángel Moratinos, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, for his career dedicated to fostering peace, dialogue, and mutual respect and understanding between different regions, notably in the Middle East.
The Prize will also be awarded to the Olympic Refuge Foundation, the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee. They will be represented by Nawal El Moutawakel, Vice-President of the International Olympic Committee, Leila Marques, Vice-President of the International Paralympic Committee, and the athletes Cindy Ngamba and Zakia Khudadadi, who made history as the first members of Refugee Olympic and Paralympic Teams to win a medal. This joint award honours their initiative to make possible the participation of refugee athletes in the Olympic and Paralympic Games. By competing on the world stage, these athletes displaced by conflict, persecution or crises inspire hope and exemplify the power of sport to unite people in the spirit of fair play, tolerance and cooperation.
The award will be presented by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Portuguese Republic, in a ceremony presided over by José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, the President of the Assembleia da República, with the participation of Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, and Edite Estrela, Head of the Portuguese Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, among others.

The award ceremony will start at noon, Lisbon time. Journalists are invited to join the ceremony at the parliament. Accreditation of media representatives is required by 27 October. Interview requests should be submitted in advance.
