Press Statement by the High Representative
for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC)
and United Nations Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia
on attacks on attacks on Christians in the Holy Land
4 May 2026, New York
The High Representative of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and the United Nations Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, Mr. Miguel Ángel Moratinos, expresses deep concern over recent incidents of violence and harassment targeting Christians in East Jerusalem, including the recent attack on a nun.
Such acts are unacceptable. The safety, dignity, and freedom of worship of all individuals, regardless of faith or nationality, and the sanctity of religious sites must be fully respected and protected, in the Holy Land and beyond.
The High Representative is also alarmed by reports of an increasing pattern of harassment and violence affecting Christian pilgrims, clergy, and Palestinian Christian residents, including reported incidents of assault and spitting. All forms of religious intolerance and provocation undermine coexistence in a city sacred to the three monotheistic faiths. Respect and mutual understanding are essential to preserving the fragile fabric of Jerusalem.
The reported arrest of a suspect is a necessary step toward accountability.
UNAOC reaffirms its commitment to fostering dialogue, mutual understanding, and respect among people of different faiths and cultures. At a time of heightened sensitivities, restraint and responsibility are more necessary than ever to preserve peace and dignity for all communities in Jerusalem.
