Press Statement by the High Representative
for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC)
and United Nations Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia
on the attack on the largest mosque in San Diego, California
19 May 2026, New York
The High Representative of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and the United Nations Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, Mr. Miguel Ángel Moratinos, expresses his shock at the horrific attack on the largest mosque in San Diego, California, in which three individuals, including a courageous security guard, lost their lives. This hate crime is especially tragic and hurtful as it occurred at the beginning of Dhul-Hijjah, one of Islam’s holiest periods leading to Eid al-Adha, a time of deep faith, reflection, and unity for Muslim communities.
Attacks on places of worship and worshippers have no place in our societies. Places of worship must remain spaces of peace and refuge, and they must be protected and safeguarded for all worshippers.
UNAOC mourns the victims, stands with their families, and expresses full solidarity with the Muslim community. When any community is targeted because of its faith, identity, or beliefs, it undermines our social cohesion and strikes at the very foundation of our shared humanity.
