Youth Peace Dialogues (Burkina Faso)

January 21, 2022

Name of Organization

Association Development by Young People (ADYP)

The “Youth Peace Dialogues” project in Burkina Faso, implemented by the Association Development by Young People, engages young people in three municipalities of Burkina Faso in peacebuilding activities to promote social cohesion. After securing a community buy-in in the target communities, 30 young people from diverse backgrounds were trained in conflict management and non-violent communication. This led to the establishment of three Young Peacebuilders Clubs, unique spaces that enable the Peace Ambassadors to work with their peers through peace education, organize dialogues and implement various community activities in order to engage more young people into peace processes. Here is the journey of Kadidiatou, a young woman leader working towards peace and stability in her community:

“My name is Kadidiatou Bocoum. I am from the municipality of Dori, in the northern part of Burkina Faso. I live in an environment where women do not have opportunities like men, where women do not have a voice like men, where women are generally relegated to the background.

My region is at the center of insecurity. With the Youth Peace Dialogues project, I have discovered that I could, as a young girl, as a girl from the region, contribute in my own way to bringing peace to my region. With the training in conflict management and non-violent communication, I learned about mediation, dialogue and communication techniques that can be used by young people in the community to prevent certain conflicts. During the training I engaged with other young people from different regions. I also had the opportunity to share the reality of my region with my peers. I realized that we have a lot in common and that my reality is not that much different from theirs. I also know now that as young people we can help change things. I, who believed that conflicts were the business of old people, politicians and soldiers, I realized that individually or collectively we have responsibilities and roles to play.

This training sparked a love of community involvement in me and gave me confidence. I was so excited that I volunteered to be a president of the Young Peace Builders Club in Dori. My young peers have praised this decision. They accepted me as their leader despite my status as a woman, which was not easy in a patriarchal environment. I was therefore able to develop my leadership and my management skills. My team listened to me and supported me a lot.

Together we started a great adventure in a participatory and inclusive dynamic. During the educational talks I saw a dynamic team that was determined. We were like a family. There too, I learned a lot. The educational talks between young people allowed me to touch the depths of the crisis within young people. Conflicts affect young people very negatively, even more so young girls. I then understood the extent and the need to invest in awareness raising, dialogue and peace education for young people. I am happy to have understood all this thanks to the project. I am now a young girl leader who is aware that small actions continue to have great results, a girl who is committed to peace, religious and community tolerance in her region.”

Description of Organization:
Association Development by Young People (ADYP) is a youth-led organization whose main objective is to contribute to empowering youth to be responsible citizens committed to peace and development in Burkina Faso. ADYP’s projects are geared towards promoting peace through UNSC resolutions 2250 and 1350.

Context:
As stated in the Cooperation Framework between Burkina Faso and the United Nations system 2018-2020, the country faces a concentration of vulnerabilities and risks. ADYP observes the rise of religious extremism and security challenges, including open and violent conflicts resulting in loss of human life, serious injuries, rising number of displaced persons and severe material damage. The most recurrent are ethnic, inter-religious and intra-religious conflicts. Young people often find themselves on the front lines as they actively participate in these conflicts. ADYP believes that they are not sufficiently sensitized or trained in non-violent communication, conflict management and peace promotion and are thus easily manipulated to fuel the crisis.

Proposed Project and Expected Results:
ADYP will work closely with young people across three selected municipalities to shift the paradigm and empower them to become agents of peace, instead of force of conflict.
30 young peacebuilders will promote peace and non-violent communication through intercultural and interreligious dialogue with their peers in the target communities. Using the United Nations Security Council Resolutions 2250, 2419 and 2535 as their foundation blocks, they will organize 30 educational dialogue sessions on religious and ethnic tolerance, respect and peace. Through intergenerational dialogue, ADYP will involve customary, religious and administrative leaders to support young people’s participation in conflict management and conflict resolution. All the work and messages will be amplified through digital campaigns and radio broadcasts.
