Name of organization:
Society for Rural Integrated and Youth Association (SRIYA)
Description of organization:
Since 1998, SRIYA has worked for the development of deprived and marginalized people in the remote areas of Odisha, India. The organization aims to establish peace through creative work in the local community and beyond.
Project description/context: This project aims to train youth from different religious and minority groups as cultural ambassadors. The youth ambassadors will then continue sharing their experiences and knowledge on peace and cooperation in their own communities, and exchange with the communities of their fellow ambassadors. Through its project, SRIYA aims to target the rising threat of religious fundamentalism, caste violence and Naxalism, as well as violence against dalits, women and minorities.
By the end of the project, SRIYA expects to:
- Partner with youth-led organizations in India to identify and nominate youth cultural ambassadors;
- Hold conferences on best intercultural practices, gender violence, human rights abuses, and the rights of Dalits to build the capacity of 130 young leaders to be cultural ambassadors;
- Invite youth cultural ambassadors to exchange best practices and achievements among themselves and with other youth in the community; and
- Conduct a youth peace message campaign involving at least 1,000 young people.
