High Representative’s Remarks at the Inauguaration of “Echoes: Upholding the Legacies of Şule Yüksel Şenler & Malcolm X” Photo Exhibit

The Echoes exhibition brings to light the lives and legacies of two influential figures who stood at the intersection of justice, faith, and human rights. As I took a peek preview at the exhibited photos, I can tell that this exhibition is more than just a collection of photographs—it is a powerful journey through the lives of two influential and transformative personalities of the 20th century.

Remarks by Under-Secretary-General Miguel Ángel Moratinos
at the Inauguration Event of
“Echoes: Upholding the Legacies of Şule Yüksel Şenler & Malcolm X”
Photo Exhibition

Her Excellency Emine Erdoğan,
the First Lady of the Republic of Türkiye;

His Excellency Mr. Hakan Fidan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye;

Mrs. Ilyasah Shabazz,
Malcolm X Memorial Foundation;

Dr. Leyla Şahin Usta,
Chairperson of Şule Yüksel Şenler Foundation;

I am very pleased to be here today at the opening of the Echoes exhibition, a tribute to the legacies of Malcolm X and Sule Yuksel Senler.

Her Excellency Emine Erdoğan has been a steadfast advocate for social justice and for important causes related to women. Recognizing the unparalleled force that women represent, the First Lady has consistently highlighted the pivotal role women play in society, from defending their rights, to healing societal wounds. Her leadership and advocacy have not only empowered women but have also inspired a broader movement towards equality and justice. The First Lady’s dedication and commitment to these causes has been instrumental in bringing this exhibition to life.

Malcolm X was not just a civil rights leader; he was a revolutionary thinker, a fearless speaker, and a symbol of resistance against racial injustice. However, Malcolm X was not a man who remained static in his beliefs. His pilgrimage to Mecca in 1964 led to a profound shift in his worldview. He embraced a more inclusive perspective on race and human rights, recognizing that the struggle for justice was not limited to one nation or people but was a global fight. This exhibition beautifully captures this transformation—his transition from a fiery nationalist to a leader advocating for unity and international solidarity.

Şule Yüksel Şenler broke the gender barrier and walked her way through the glass ceiling. Her work inspired countless women to pursue education and activism, challenging societal norms. She became a leading role model in women’s participation in the public sphere. This exhibition highlights her remarkable journey and the impact she had on Turkish society.

Both, despite their different geographical and historical contexts, their objectives intersected as they fought for social equality and rights with courage and determination.

At the heart of this exhibition is the concept of justice, not only as a legal or a political principle but as a personal and cultural call to action. Justice is also a fundamental pillar of the United Nations’ mission, rooted in its Charter and deeply embedded in its efforts to promote international peace, security, and human rights.

Today, we face complex global challenges including a push back on human rights. Around the world we see a disturbing rise in racial discrimination, xenophobia, and religious intolerance, which are violations of the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

These manifestations of hate and discrimination strike at the core of our shared humanity and repudiate the values we uphold. It is imperative that we address these challenges with courage and determination.

Upholding human rights and, protection of all individuals’ dignity are fundamental principles that permeate every aspect of the United Nations’

work. The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations’ (UNAOC) work across its pillars of Youth, Women, Media , Education and Migration is aligned with this commitment. Since its establishment, UNAOC has been dedicated to addressing the root causes of polarization, racism, and xenophobia. Through the promotion of intercultural and interreligious dialogue, mutual respect, and understanding, we strive to build bridges between communities and foster a culture of peace and mutual respect through dialogue.

Our motto, “Many Cultures, One Humanity,” continues to be our guiding principle underscores the importance of unity and collaboration in our efforts to address the challenges we face today.

Excellencies,

The Echoes exhibition reflects the impact of the work and the legacy of Malcolm X and Sule Yuksel Senler that still echo today.

Let us continue to work together to uphold the values of human rights, justice, and dignity for all.

Let us be inspired to take forward the mission for justice, dignity, and empowerment.

I look forward to walking through the exhibition with the First Lady of the Republic of Türkiye, and the distinguished guests.

I thank you.
