Watch Live: UNAOC Group of Friends High-level Meeting
What:
On the margins of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) will hold its annual high-level meeting of its Group of Friends on Thursday, 21 September 2023, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM New York time, in Conference Room 12, at the United Nations headquarters, New York.
Why:
The High Representative will brief the Group of Friends members on UNAOC’s advocacy work, institutional developments, programmes and progress made under various portfolios and mandates during 2022–2023, including the UNAOC Action Plan 2019–2023. The meeting will also serve as an occasion to highlight planned activities in 2024, including the Tenth UNAOC Global Forum, which will be hosted by the Government of Portugal.
Who:
The event will be chaired by Under-Secretary-General Mr. Miguel Ángel Moratinos, High Representative for UNAOC.
The high-level opening segment will feature remarks from:
- H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis, President of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly;
- H.E. Mr. Hakan Fidan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye;
- H.E. Mr. José Manuel Albares Bueno, Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain.
A general discussion will follow with interventions from the UNAOC Group of Friends, which currently comprises 160 members, including 130 UN Member States, 1 non-member state, and 29 international organizations.
UNAOC benefits from the political support of the Group of Friends, which is a community of countries and international organizations that actively promotes the Alliance’s objectives and work at the global, regional and local levels. The Group of Friends plays a vital role in UNAOC’s strategic planning and implementation processes. Through a broad dialogue-based and consensus-building approach, the High Representative for UNAOC seeks the input, advice and support of members of the Group of Friends on all key aspects of UNAOC’s activities and its mandate.
