On the Occasion of Nelson Mandela International Day

In November 2009, the United Nations declared 18 July Nelson Mandela International Day to shine a light on the legacy of the iconic anti-apartheid campaigner, South Africa’s first democratically-elected President, and an international symbol of dignity and resilience. Nelson Mandela International Day is a reminder that everyone has the power to make a change, and “seek the world as it should be,” as Nelson Mandela said.
With his commitment to justice, human rights and fundamental freedoms, Nelson Mandela reminds us of the importance of dialogue and solidarity across all lines and divisions. His legacy resonates with the mission of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), to promote collective action in order to advance respect for cultures, traditions, and religious beliefs, as well as to bridge divides and overcome prejudice, misconceptions, and polarization.
Amid rising culturally-based conflicts, radicalization and xenophobia, let us remember the values that inspired Nelson Mandela: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
