The Istanbul Forum Report
A review of outcomes from the 2nd Alliance of Civilizations Forum
On 6-7 April 2009, almost 2000 people gathered in the capital of Turkey, Istanbul, for the 2nd Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations. Heads of government. Ministers and policy-makers. Business leaders and philanthropists. Civil society activists. Religious leaders. Journalists. Thinkers and scholars. Young people.
Over two days, lively debate stretched from dawn to dusk. Political leaders talked not only to each other, but interacted with Forum participants from all walks of life. And through the dozens of workshops, presentations and breakfast meetings, a dialogue took place about a vision. A vision of a world in which different faiths and cultures could not only live side by side in peace, but be brought together for the good of all humanity.
This is the vision of the Alliance of Civilizations.
The Alliance does not just seek dialogue, but a dialogue which delivers real difference in the lives of ordinary people and communities around the world. And in Istanbul, extraordinary things were achieved. Partnerships for action between different organizations and citizens. The launch of new projects, national and regional initiatives. The showcasing of innovative new ideas from young people and civil society organizations, in a truly global ‘marketplace of ideas.’ These outcomes are featured in the Istanbul Forum Report, which we invite you to download at: www.unaoc.org.
Much work remains to be done. But the accomplishments of Istanbul are a step in the right direction, and will serve as a guide and a tool for advancing a cause which requires the continued support of leaders from all over the world, and all parts of society. I warmly invite you to read the Istanbul Forum Report, and to join our continuing mission – to build an Alliance of Civilizations.
