Sustainable Development Cluster (SDC) supports diverse partners with their peacebuilding, humanitarian and development operations. It was formed by combining the following portfolios: Grants Management Services (GMS), UN Technology Support Services (UNTSS), Development and Special Initiatives Portfolio (DSIP) It provides Services to partners’ programmes that are designed, structured, and managed with a global perspective and primarily serving partners that are headquartered in New York. The SDC has a footprint of approximately 125 countries.
The Project “Peer-to-peer capacity-building training between young religious leaders and young media makers” is delivered under the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) Intercultural Engagement portfolio. This Project seeks to enhance the capacity of young religious leaders and young media professionals to collaborate on social media to mediate sectarian tensions, to create meaningful messages to counter terrorist narratives, and to promote social cohesion.
During the Project, participants will:
- Strengthen their capacity to mediate interfaith conversations on social media.
- Enhance their ability to counter terrorist narratives and foster interreligious understanding on social media.
- Increase their competencies to engage local communities around issues related to religion, interfaith tensions, violent extremism and social cohesion.
- Improve their ability to advocate for better collaboration between media professionals, religious leaders and policy makers in the field of interfaith dialogue.
- Improve their ability to advocate for the creation and dissemination of religious media literacy tools to counter terrorist narratives and to foster social cohesion.
This is a position in UNOPS for supporting projects carried out for UNAOC. The incumbent of this position will be a personnel of UNOPS under its full responsibility.
The Facilitator will provide facilitation and training support for the global implementation of the UNAOC/UNOCT/UNCCT Project: Peer-to-peer capacity-building training between young religious leaders and young media makers. The Workshop Facilitator will be retained to provide support for the facilitation of online and in-person workshops, seminars, training programmes and other capacity building activities, with some travel to UN Headquarters New York and the field, if possible. The Facilitator will also be responsible for reporting and providing performance, measurement and evaluation data on the workshops and training.
The Facilitator will provide technical guidance as follows:
- Review and analyze existing research and material focusing on online radicalization and sectarian hate speech, online PVE and online counter-narratives to VE, so as to customize the project curriculum to participants needs;
- Develop concept notes, educational material and pedagogical methods for the online and in-person activities relating to online radicalization and sectarian hate speech, online PVE, and online counter-narratives to VE;
- Provide facilitation during online and in-person workshops/trainings, using interactive and engaging facilitation methods to maximize participation;
- Provide support to trainees throughout the different phases of the Project;
- In collaboration with the other trainers, develop Measurement and Evaluation tools to measure the progression of participants’ competencies and record participants’ responses and workshop/training lessons, outcomes, and findings;
- In collaboration with the other trainers, draft a post-training report summarizing the activities conducted (online engagement modules, workshops and webinars), results of the online surveys, lessons learned and recommendations;
- In collaboration with the other trainers, draft reports of each workshop/training and technical assistance activity, including analysis and assessment of lessons learned and options for improving future delivery; and
- Provide technical advice and feedback on training modules and materials, and recommendations for improvement where appropriate.
All content and materials are subject to UNAOC’s approval. UNAOC will be allowed to share content and material with relevant partners as a resource free of costs, for further use in their activities, including the possibility to share with their organization and beneficiaries.
Monitoring and Progress Controls
- Deliver and provide direct assistance for the facilitation of capacity building workshops/training.
- Contribute to the continued development and incorporation of good practice and lessons learned into the project delivery.
- Contribute to the project’s Measurement and Evaluation framework.

- Advanced university degree in political science, international relations, journalism, peace and conflict studies, security studies, community development or other relevant field.
- Two (2) additional years of relevant work experience, in combination with a relevant first level university (bachelor’s degree or equivalent), may substitute for the requirement of a master’s degree.
- A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in online youth engagement and capacity building related to preventing violent extremism or other relevant fields.
Desirable experience (the following experience is optional candidates who do not have it are welcome to apply)
- Strong knowledge of the latest research and global policies focusing on the issues of online PVE, online radicalization, sectarian hate speech, and online counter-narratives to VE is highly desirable.
- Experience in facilitating workshops both online and in-person for multicultural and religious youth using creative approaches to motivate participation is highly desirable.
- Experience collating workshop outcomes into reports, analyzing findings and providing recommendations for improved project delivery is highly desirable.
- Experience developing and analyzing Measurement and Evaluation tools for online learning is highly desirable.
- Good command of social media and online communication tools is highly desirable.
- Good understanding of interreligious dialogue between the three Abrahamic faiths is highly desirable.
- Experience facilitating high-level and multi-stakeholder workshops and events is highly desirable;
- Able to use a gender approach.
- Able to work in a team.
- Fluency in English (write, read, talk) is required

Contract type, level and duration

- Contract duration: ICA retainer modality. A retainer contract is issued for a period of time during which the services of the individual contractor are required intermittently. The individual contractor agreement on retainer basis will specify a “unit price” per day worked. For budgetary purposes, a monetary cap will be determined when the contract is awarded and issued. Please note that the retainer contract will not provide for a minimum, and payment will be made only after completion of work.
