MITI – Migrants´ Integration Territorial Index
The general objectives of the project were the development and implementation of a methodology capable of measuring the level of integration of migrants, both at the national and regional levels. Through the identification and comparison of different models the project aimed at a better comprehension of the concept of integration. Using a common framework of statistical indicators organised into thematic areas, for each of these areas every partner explored the possibility of developing an index. Namely, a ‘Polarisation Index’, a ‘Social Stability Index’ and, finally, a ‘Labour Integration Index’. The MITI project involved a comparative study of the different levels of socio-economic integration of immigrants from Third countries across different geographical areas (regions, and major metropolitan areas) in each partner...

A better informed and assisted voluntary return of migrants – Portugal
The proposal aims at conducting mapping exercises in Portugal to identify the main channels of information and location of potential assisted voluntary return (AVR) beneficiaries from those communities mostly seeking IOM’s AVR support.
The main objective of this study is to better understand the specific channels of access to information of the migrant communities in order to promote a better informed and sustainable assisted voluntary return of migrants. Hence the project aims at developing a comprehensive database including the channels of access to information of migrant communities. This will ultimately improve and facilitate a privileged contact with these communities enabling the main actors working in the migration field to reinforce communication with the main migrant communities in Portugal. A very comprehensive analysis will be undertaken of...

ACIDI – Evaluation of the National Immigrant Support Centres
IOM is currently conducting the 3rd Evaluation of the National Immigrant Support Services in Portugal (ACIDI). The evaluations have allowed to determine the relevance, the level of achievement of project objectives, and their impact. Another major feature of the evaluations is that they also feed lessons learned into the decision-making process of the project stakeholders and national partners. The first evaluation concerned only the National Immigrant support centres, but currently ACIDI decided to evaluate other support services, namely the Local centres, the SOS Immigrant Telephone Line and the Telephone translation service. Qualitative and quantitative methods and techniques have been applied, such as Interviews (immigrants associations; public agencies representatives) and surveys (immigrant’s users...

A Multifaith Approach
Funded by the European Commission and implemented by IOM Helsinki in cooperation with partners in five EU countries, this pilot project tested the usefulness of multifaith training seminars for migrant religious leaders as a tool for integration. The seminars enabled religious leaders of various denominations to meet with their peers and host society representatives, including officials, policy-makers, and various experts. The project was based on the notion that newly-arrived migrants, who are unfamiliar with their new host society, often seek support from religious communities, whose leaders can therefore play a crucial role in how migrants relate to and integrate into their host communities. The training seminars provided participants with a greater understanding of the values as well as the history, culture, and laws of their...

Istanbul, capital of cultures
The central position of Istanbul in Turkey has resulted in attracting migrants from far and wide and all in search of the economic, cultural, and social opportunities as well as from other parts of Turkey and the picture grows more complex with returns of Turkish migrants from abroad. Although the number of foreigners living in Istanbul has increased in last decades, there is little information on their potentials, transnational ties and their contributions to the society and so far the international migration has only been associated with problems. However, the orientation toward problems has been concealing the potentials and possibilities of diversity, multiculturalism and trans-nationalism for social, cultural and economic development, innovation as well as value creation. The project thus aims to identify what these potentials and...

Over an eight-day training, a group of 25 selected welfare officers have been exposed to techniques for the design and delivery of social services to migrants. The training, which will be extended throughout the country, also included migrant community leaders who provided information on migrants' access to basic services and this provided participants with a unique insight into problems and living conditions of migrants directly from themselves. Moreover, a training manual entitled “Delivery of Basic Social...

The Integration Award for Sports
State Secretary, Dr. Reinhold Lopatka, initiated the "Association to Encourage Integration through Sports" and created the "Integration Award for Sports" in cooperation with the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF). Successful integration is combined with positive images in sports, contributing to an increased sense of "togetherness". When people of different nationalities, religions, or with different worldviews meet through sports, there is generally no room for reservations; skills like tolerance, fairness, team spirit, and solidarity can be explored and shared. A jury comprising individuals from the fields of sports, business, and social affairs selects the best projects. They look closely at qualities like sustainability, originality, working method, visibility, and the level of volunteerism. The only condition is that the projects must have already...

The Intercultural cities pilot developed a model for integration of migrants/minorities based on the analysis of innovative practice of cities across Europe and exploring the notion of diversity advantage (diversity can be a resource, not a threat, if managed properly). These tools include a Policy assessment grid which outlines the main elements of a strategic approach to intercultural integration (10 steps to an intercultural city strategy), puts forward questions and criteria for assessing city policy and governance “through the intercultural lens” and examples from cities across Europe.
