“La Barbería” – or in English, “the Barbershop” is a new musical comedy by David Maldonado and Ari Maniel Cruz and directed by Waddys Jacquez that will play an open-ended engagement at New World Stages, beginning February 3, with an official opening on February 17.
The show is a comedy drama inspired in the history of the Dominican migration to New York, a portrait of Washington Heights, a neighborhood influx and a tribute to the strength of a community. This off-Broadway show uses original contemporary Latin music emanating from the airwaves and is performed mostly in Spanish.
Jacquez pointed out that La Barbería is not only a history about the Dominicans that arrived to the US, got settled and fought to get integrated into society, but also about those who were born in the States and continue to fight for the improvement of their community. Dominicans have made a strong contribution to the city of New York. Indeed “Dominicans got the neighborhood of Washington Heights back on its feet” reminded Cruz.
