During meetings at the Foreign Ministry, President Sampaio explored ways of cooperating in the future and put forward a number of concrete ideas reflecting common interest, as well as the appointment of a Focal Point to coordinate activities with the Alliance. President Sampaio also gave a lecture at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, in which he emphasized the role of the UN Alliance in promoting good governance of cultural diversity and addressing cultural diversity as the fourth pillar of sustainable development. [PDF: Dr Sampaio - TP King Faisal Center for research and islamic studies Feb 2010 def] President Jorge Sampaio, visited Saudi Arabia, which recently joined the UN Alliance’s Group of Friends. While in Saudi Arabia, President Sampaio also made his first official visit to the Organization of the Islamic Conference’s (OIC) headquarters, where he met with the Secretary-General, Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu. They agreed on the development of a Joint Action Plan, based on the existing Memorandum of Understanding between the UN Alliance and the OIC and to be presented at the next Forum of the UN Alliance in Rio in May 2010. President Sampaio underlined a number of areas of existing cooperation, including the “Restore Trust, Rebuild Bridges” initiative, aimed at improving cross-cultural relations in the Euro-Mediterranean area. President Sampaio also emphasized areas in which the OIC could support the work of the Alliance, particularly in encouraging the adoption of National Plans on Intercultural Dialogue by OIC member countries. During his visit, President Sampaio also gave a seminar on OIC-UN Alliance of Civilizations relations (notes from the seminar available here [PDF: Dr Sampaio TP Seminar OIC Feb 2010]) and had meetings at the Islamic Development Bank to explore cooperation and develop a Memorandum of Understanding. |
