The High Representative of the UN Alliance of Civilizations,
President Jorge Sampaio, met the new Director-General of UNESCO, Mrs Irina Bokova, on 1st February 2010.
Their talks focused on cooperation between the UN Alliance and UNESCO at a time when the first MoU signed between UNESCO and the Alliance, in 2008 has to be renewed. President Sampaio highlighted that the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures (2010) and UNESCO’s World Report, Investing in Cultural Diversity and Intercultural Dialogue offered good perspectives for increased collaboration. He recalled that one of the UN Alliance’s key goals was to raise the profile of cultural diversity in the global political agenda. As a political initiative acting as a “broker, a convener and a catalyst”, one of the main strengths of the Alliance is the capacity to generate political support and synergies. President Sampaio suggested that the national and regional strategies for intercultural dialogue pushed forward by the Alliance offered unique opportunities for a strengthened collaboration with UNESCO.  He stressed the need to mutually coordinate action in the fields where identified complementarities bring added value and where common initiatives can produce change on the ground. This calls for a renewed Memorandum of Understanding between them, on which work should start right away.
