It is with great sadness that I learned the news of Professor Mohamed Charfi’s passing away.
Though I did not have the privilege to know Professor Charfi personally, I am most grateful for his invaluable contributions to the work of the High-level Group of the Alliance of Civilizations, building on his insightful writings on Islam and modernity and his highly effective reform of the Tunisian education system during his time as Minister of Education. Professor Charfi’s ideas helped lay down the foundations on which the Alliance of Civilizations was established and contributed to shape its outlook on the future. For all this, I would like to pay sincere tribute to his memory. Professor Charfi will be deeply regretted by his familiy, his friends, his students but also by all those who had the privilege to benefit from his insights, his reforms and his vision as well from his firm commitment to peace and to promote respect for the inalienable rights of all members of the human family. |
