Statement from Professor Mehmet Aydin and Professor Federico Mayor, co-Chairs of the Alliance of Civilizations High-level Group on the death of Professor Mohamed Charfi on 7 June 2008

It is with great sadness that we learned the news of Professor Mohamed Charfi’s passing away.

As co-Chairs of the Alliance of Civilizations High-level Group, we, as well as the other members of the High-level Group, have had the privilege to witness Professor Charfi’s deep knowledge of Islam and modernity and we have greatly benefited from his insights on the role of education in building bridges across cultures.

His invaluable contribution to the work of the High-level Group was an inspiration to us all and helped establish the Alliance of Civilizations on firm foundations.
