Jorge Sampaio, High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, gave an opening statement at the Informal Thematic Debate of the General Assembly “Civilizations and the Challenge for Peace: obstacles and opportunities”. He urged the world to challenge the idea that civilizations were doomed to confrontation and war and said that an action-oriented strategy is currently being developed to promote better understanding and interaction in the world of politics and religion, and to ensure that such understanding was reflected in global diplomatic efforts and political decisions.
