The First Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations |
|
Hosted by the Government of Spain on January 15-16 in Madrid, the First Alliance of Civilizations Forum convened political leaders, representatives of international and regional bodies, religious leaders, youth, corporate executives, civil society groups, and foundations for open dialogue on reducing polarization between nations and launching joint initiatives to promote cross-cultural understanding globally. The presence of over 900 participants and 89 official delegations in Madrid is testament to the interest that the Alliance is generating throughout the world.
The Forum was organized around 3 plenary sessions and 8 working sessions over the course of two days. Participants from 78 countries discussed issues as diverse as the role of the media in intercultural dialogue, the challenges and demands facing religious leaders as advocates for peace, and the opportunities that multiculturalism can provide to the business world. Taking a practical approach, the Forum offered a unique international platform to governmental agencies, international organizations and representatives of civil society to forge partnerships and develop concrete initiatives in the sphere of intercultural and inter-religious dialogue, particularly in the Alliance’s priority areas of education, youth, migration and the media.
A High Level Political Dialogue meeting of the Group of Friends of the Alliance was also held. Attended by approximately 70 countries (46 at the Ministerial level or equivalent) and 13 international organizations, the meeting demonstrated the broad political support enjoyed by the Alliance. Noteworthy among the results of this meeting were the signing by the High Representative of five Memoranda of Understanding – with UNESCO, the League of Arab States, ISESCO, ALECSO, and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), a Letter of Intent with the Council of Europe, and the unveiling of country strategies to implement the goals of the Alliance at the national and regional levels.

Expanding Student Exchange Programs |
|
International student exchange and scholarship programs are effective ways of opening the doors to new education opportunities and can help build bridges of understanding among students from a diversity of countries. However, this potential is not exploited to the full. In particular, exchanges between North and South are still limited, with few students from the developing world taking up study programs in Europe and the US and even fewer students from the North studying in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. |

Overview
Walking side by side. Sharing a meal and a story. Learning through this simple exchange of hospitality that, no matter what divides us, what unites us is far greater still. The ancient path of Abraham the Friend – the Masar Ibrahim al Khalil – invites us to set out, in a spirit of friendship, on a journey through the heart of the Middle East to remember our common origins, respect our differences, and recognize our shared humanity.
The story of Abraham is humanity’s most widely shared origin story, reminding us of the scientific and spiritual truth that we are all one family. The Masar Ibrahim al Khalil is a cultural route that retraces the remembered journey of Abraham and his family through the cradle of civilization four thousand years ago. The Masar (Arabic for path) connects many of the world’s most fabled and cherished destinations, ultimately spanning ten countries. The Masar is at once a network of ancient walking paths, a place of courageous encounter across cultures, and an open-air university where people, young and old, can rediscover what connects us all.
What are the intended benefits of the path?
In the genuine encounter of guests and hosts in dozens of villages along the Masar, many practical benefits will emerge including: • dignified livelihood for villagers • leadership training for youth • empowerment for women • restoration of cultural and natural heritage • inspiring positive media about the hospitality of the Middle East • and practical hope for humanity
When will the path be open?
The Masar – Abraham’s Path -- is no longer just a dream, but an emerging reality as the first few thousand intrepid travelers journey along parts of it, the first twenty host villages open their generous doors, the first hundred families reap economic benefits, and the first few million people share in the message of human unity through the media and on the web. In 2009 over 3,000 people walked parts of the path and more groups are planning trips every day.
The Masar is also beginning to come alive with friendship walks and runs organized in communities anywhere in the world, inspired by Abraham’s journey. The first Friendship Run took place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in June 2009 with over 2,000 runners participating.
